Top 10: Booking Steps For AJ Lee VS. Stephanie McMahon At WrestleMania 31
8 март 2015 г. в 22:48

Stephanie McMahon is the most powerful and hated character on WWE TV, is in great shape, can still wrestle, and many fans want to see her get what she deserves in the ring. AJ Lee is a great worker with a fiery personality who’s also fantastic on the microphone, who has also made a niche for herself as the ‘anti-Total Diva’.

If you put these two women together in the ring, you’d have a license to print money.

The history that AJ and Stephanie have together is substantial. Stephanie has intimidated AJ Lee before, and has made disparaging remarks about her and her husband. AJ Lee’s recent ‘#GiveDivasAChance’ tweets have embarrassed Stephanie on social media, leading to rumors that Stephanie was ‘furious’ towards AJ.

All of this would lead to a great storyline and WrestleMania match between the two women. AJ Lee has already faced off against virtually every single other Diva in the WWE (outside NXT), and the only person on the main rosters left for her to fight is Stephanie herself.

It would be criminal for WWE to not capitalize on this golden opportunity to build a more realistic feud that would bring more attention to the Divas Division.

With only weeks left before WrestleMania, time is of the essence to book this match. The pages that follow will highlight 10 important steps in booking one a great match between Stephanie McMahon and AJ Lee.

-
10. Stephanie McMahon Initially Plays It Cool And Supports AJ Lee

The first step in this rivalry would be to establish Stephanie as a two-faced liar vis-à-vis her relationship with AJ Lee. Stephanie is excellent at putting on her ‘fake, condescending voice’, and would initially support AJ for her return and ‘adding excitement’ to the Divas Division.

A key point in this part of the feud would be for AJ and WWE to openly acknowledge AJ’s Twitter statements, and make them central components of the rivalry. Stephanie would pretend to have appreciated AJ’s comments, while the commentators would note that Stephanie ‘must be thinking the opposite’.

The best way for this to be done is for both AJ and Stephanie to be featured together in a backstage vignette, in which Stephanie welcomes AJ back to WWE and ‘appreciates’ her being there. AJ wouldn’t buy it, and would throw in a few veiled insults towards Stephanie, but AJ’s focus wouldn’t be on Stephanie right away, because…

9. AJ Lee Continues To Attack The Total Divas

Despite this being a rivalry between AJ and Stephanie, AJ should continue her physical involvement with the Bella twins for at least one more week. The idea behind this is that the Bellas are the faces of Total Divas, and thus represent that direction of women in WWE, and everything that AJ is opposed to.

AJ’s motivation for attacking them would be a continuation of her old rivalry with them: that she became the top Diva through hard work, athleticism and wrestling, while the Bellas, according to a promo AJ could cut, ‘are just pretty faces with limited wrestling skill who married their way to the top and became famous on a trashy TV show.’

AJ would face off against the Bellas either in singles competition or in tandem with Paige for a week or so, in what the commentators would state would be great matches (compared to that 30-second debacle that took place recently).

This would be symbolic, as AJ Lee and Paige represent the wrestling side of the Divas Division, while the Bellas are the reality show stars (despite Paige’s appearance on the show, people know her more from her in-ring career anyway).

Initially, these matches would continue the idea that AJ and Paige would be facing the Bella Twins at WrestleMania, until the following event takes place that completely changes that direction…

8. Stephanie McMahon Takes Credit For Improving Women’s Matches On RAW

On the March 2 edition of RAW a Diva’s Title match was given almost 7 minutes of time (including commercials), which is a huge improvement from the one-move, 30 second ‘match’ that happened the week prior. Part of this change stems from the #GiveDivasAChance hashtag trending on social media, which itself stems from something AJ Lee said in response to a tweet by Stephanie on gender equality.

In sum, it’s safe to say that AJ Lee’s actions made a difference. So what better way to build hostility between the two women than for Stephanie take credit for the improvement in Divas’ matches?

WWE doesn’t mention tweets that go against their company mantra or that aren’t directly approved by WWE’s filtering mechanism; in fact, AJ mentioning that she’s ‘giving Divas a chance’ was the only reference towards the entire thing. Furthermore, while this might be a big deal for those fans who follow wrestling news online and those who follow WWE Superstars and Divas on social media, the remaining fans might not even know about this whole issue.

As such, Stephanie would come out for a promo, lauding the improvements and overall success of the Divas division in recent years. She would go on about how the Divas are social media stars, role models, etc., and then brag that everything that helped the Divas to become stars is her doing. This would of course garner her even more heat, especially from those fans who love AJ Lee and are just as critical of the current state of the Divas Division as she is.

AJ, meanwhile, would be watching this from a TV screen somewhere in the backstage area, furious that Stephanie is saying such things when she (and most of the fans) knows that it was AJ herself that started this backlash against the relatively poor treatment of the Divas Division on the main roster.

This would set up the next segment, which would be the catalyst in making this feud work…

7. AJ Lee Cuts A ‘Pipe Bombshell’ Promo Directed At Stephanie McMahon

In response to Stephanie patting herself on the back for the positive changes in the Diva’s division, AJ Lee would come out and cut a scathing promo against Stephanie, condemning her for being a two-faced liar and a hypocrite, among other things. This promo would be very similar to her original ‘pipe bombshell’ promo, only this once would be more laced with criticism leveled at Stephanie (the character, not the person).

The best way to book this would be for AJ Lee to interfere in a match between Paige and one of the Bellas, helping Paige get the win. While the two of them would be recovering at ringside, AJ would grab a microphone and go on a long rant similar to her original one. The goal of this segment would be to make it sound as ‘real’ as possible, despite being targeted at Stephanie’s character.

To add insult to injury, AJ would mention the women in NXT, who are being praised for their in-ring work, get long matches, main event the Network specials, and even get paid more than the male stars. These things would put Stephanie in a very bad light, and portray her as a bad boss.

Even though this happening is very unlikely, given WWE’s strange policy of rarely mentioning NXT outside of promoting WWE Network specials, if AJ were to do this it would accomplish three things: portray the Stephanie McMahon character in a bad light, promote AJ as a crusader for the well-being of women in WWE, and raise interest in NXT.

6. A Social Media War Ensues

There are only three weeks left until WrestleMania, which doesn’t leave much time for a feud to really mature. With so many feuds, storylines, and promotions happening every week in WWE, there might not be enough time on either RAW or SmackDown for this feud to really mature.

That’s why a big portion of this feud would take place on social media, in particularly on Twitter. While there is a risk that some people might perceive this as an inappropriate medium for furthering feuds, considering that many Superstars and Divas use their Twitter handles for non-wrestling purposes and are thus considered ‘real’ tweets, the fact is that for this feud to work, using social media to build the feud is absolutely necessary.

It would be on this platform where the two characters would take digs at one another. Stephanie would do her best to praise the Divas Division in any way possible, while AJ would cut her down and call her out on every single one of her tweets. This would establish AJ as the real voice for change in the Division, while Stephanie would come across as the self-righteous and arrogant boss who doesn’t know what’s best for the women.

Stephanie would naturally get mad at AJ for doing all of this, and would channel that into particularly nasty promo against AJ Lee the following week…

5. Stephanie McMahon Makes It Personal By Mentioning AJ Lee’s Husband

On the penultimate RAW before WrestleMania, Stephanie once again comes out to criticize AJ Lee. But this time, she makes it personal by mentioning AJ’s husband, CM Punk. This is a risky move, given the situation surrounding the man at this time, but it’s this kind of realistic storytelling that would really make this feud work.

Stephanie would cut a ‘shoot’ promo of her own, condemning Punk as an arrogant, self-absorbed loud-mouth who complained way too much and who always wanted his way. Stephanie would make reference to Punk’s infamous promo and the Summer of Punk, criticizing him for both his insulting remarks against her family and his own hypocrisy for being ‘the voice of the voiceless’ while leaving the company without so much as a ‘thank you’.

Stephanie would then belittle AJ for being married to such a man, as well as make personal digs at AJ’s own difficult past. This would push AJ to her limit, and she would slap Stephanie as hard as possible. This would then lead to a ‘cat fight’ of sorts, with the two women fighting each other before being separated by agents.

This event would, of course, get replayed quite often, to emphasize the shock of another Diva attacking Stephanie, who is often portrayed as untouchable. Stephanie would be both enraged and embarrassed by the situation, leading us to the next step…

4. The Match Is Announced

Following such a physical confrontation, Stephanie would finally agree to wrestle AJ at WrestleMania on the following SmackDown, but the match would have a special stipulation: if AJ Lee loses, she would be fired from WWE.

Now, some out there might be critical of this decision, especially considering that she just returned after a 3-month hiatus, and such a stipulation won’t be believable. Furthermore, ‘firing’ storylines have been done recently and weren’t well-received, with the Team Cena firing being a particular hotbed for criticism.

However, the narrative behind this stipulation would require that AJ explain to the audience that if she loses (and that would be a BIG if), she would be able to live happily alongside her husband.

That said, the remaining segments, video packages and confrontations would build AJ Lee as a true ‘heroine’ of the Divas Division, as the individual who is really trying to fight for women’s equality, while Stephanie would be the one who’s trying to maintain the status quo, because it’s ‘best for business’. AJ would accept the stipulation, but she would be built as an underdog fighting an uphill battle against the most powerful woman in WWE.

3. Stephanie Abuses Her Power, Making Life Difficult for AJ

For the go-home week leading up to WrestleMania, Stephanie abuses her power as much as possible, making AJ Lee wrestle in gauntlet matches, being put in terrible match types (like having one arm tied behind her back, blindfold, or in a Lumberjill match with the women surrounding the ring being those closest to Stephanie, and no allies for AJ Lee), and having her wrestle throughout the week, i.e. on RAW, SmackDown, Superstars, and anywhere else she can.

The idea behind this would be for AJ Lee to be determined to face Stephanie no matter how many times she wins or loses, and that AJ would eventually get her hands on Stephanie on the biggest stage of them all.

Meanwhile, Stephanie would cut promos and show videos of how in-shape she is, how much taller and more physically-gifted she is, and in general how she’s superior to AJ Lee in every way. This narrative would lead to a kind of David vs. Goliath kind of encounter, with AJ appearing to be disadvantaged, no matter how much she keeps fighting.

2. The Match Is Heavily Hyped

In order to build such a match in so short a time, there would be a lot of segments and promos to build up the match. The other Divas can feud with each other while still praising AJ or Stephanie, the commentators can hype the match by referencing the social media war between the two women, and, if possible, WWE could even include a ‘Best of Stephanie McMahon’ special on the WWE Network to build her up as the dominant woman in WWE.

The motivation behind so much attention being on this one match is to pursue that whole gender equality motivation that started this whole feud. The goal behind this match and the higher-than-normal amount of attention given to it would be to really try to break the stigma and stereotypes surrounding Divas matches.

Many people consider Divas matches as the ‘bathroom break match’ which sadly does a lot of harm for the Divas Division. This match between Stephanie and AJ would therefore by hyped as a sort of ‘can’t miss’ match, which would hopefully help break that negative reputation that women’s matches have earned in recent years.

1. AJ Lee Wins With A GTS

Putting this match on at WrestleMania will be difficult; there are already a lot of matches on the card, and so this match would have to be relatively short, i.e. no more than 10 minutes of in-ring action. In terms of card placement, this match would have to be placed higher on the card, preferably between the last mid-card match and the first main event match.

That way, fans in attendance and viewers watching at home won’t be completely drained from the excitement of more heavily-hyped matches and therefore won’t use this match time to go to the bathroom or disregard this match. After all, the point is for this match to be built to be as important as possible.

The psychology of this match would be based on Stephanie being in great shape and overpowering AJ whenever possible. However, AJ would show her own inner fire, refusing to be beaten by Stephanie and constantly getting up from Stephanie’s overbearing offense.

The closing minutes of the match would see AJ Lee and Stephanie both hitting their signature and finishing moves, with AJ reversing a Pedigree and Stephanie escaping the Black Widow via reaching the ring ropes.

As a final insult to Stephanie, AJ would perform a surprise move, hoisting Stephanie onto her shoulders and connecting with the Go 2 Sleep, as a tribute to her husband, and pin Stephanie in the center of the ring. With this, AJ would officially have defeated virtually every prominent Diva on the roster, and thus establish herself as the real top woman in WWE.
